Dr. Anthony D. Hill

Dr. Anthony D. Hill, Professor Emeritus at The Ohio State University, is a distinguished scholar in African-American and American theatre history, performance theory, and literature. He has notably developed seminars on August Wilson and was featured in Who’s Who in Black Columbus (2006). His acclaimed book, Historical Dictionary of African American Theatre, is in its third edition with publishers Rowman and Littlefield.

Hill is featured in the Detroit Public Library’s African American Booklet (2020); and Who’s Who in Black Columbus (2006 ed.). His essays appeared in such journals as Text and Presentation; Journal of the Comparative Drama Conference; Black Studies: Current Issues, Enduring Questions; and African American Review (formerly Black American Literature Forum). He contributed several articles to Dr. Quintard Taylor’s extensive website of African American history titled BlackPast.org; a book review in the Journal of the Southern Central Modern Language Association; was contributing editor for History of the Theatre (9th ed.); Theatre Studies, and Elimu.

He was the keynote speaker at the 2012 Seminar on August Wilson at Wisconsin University, Madison. Hill holds advanced degrees from the University of Washington (B.A.), Queens College (M.A.), and New York University (Ph.D.) in performance studies. He has taught at Queens College, Vassar College, University of California, Santa Barbara, and The Ohio State University, and has been active in numerous professional theatre organizations.
